Boot Camp Marketing – Owner Interview – Part 4 of 4

This post brings you the 4th and final part of the interview with owner Shawna Kaminski from Fit Body Boot Camp Calgary.

You can check the 1st part of the interview here, 2nd part here and the 3rd part here. The 1st part has the audio recording of the entire interview.

Fernando:
This is the FBBC unstoppable fitness formula that you are obviously have involved with because you teach the formula to other owners. How would you say that the experience that you get in FBBC, in our boot camps, is different than clients can get at let's say a gym or different personal training center. Because we’re always pushing the envelope and looking for what works best, and always changing our workouts right?

Shawna:
Well that's the big thing. I train at a gym where people train one-on-one with a trainer and it's more like a counseling session... people will sit for 5 minutes and then do one set of laps... I’m like that's ridiculous you know, and you look at professional athletes... for example NFL football players... do you think that they go to the field and practice by themselves. Do they condition by themselves? They might do some, but for the most part those athletes are working within a group and the beauty of FBBC is it's really like personal training in a group setting. So you have the energy of the group that helps spurn you on to probably push you in ways that just a trainer or you could not reach just on your own. And in FBBC, we're always stalking... my clients laugh because I'm like I need your cell phone number. They're like why? Well because I need to stalk you when you're not here. We're not like a gym... if you're not coming we're chasing you down, It's part of our boot camp marketing, retention strategy. No box gym will do that.

Fernando:
You need to deliver the results right, and ultimately it's best of both worlds... you have somewhat the price of a box gym... but you have the results of the personal trainer and then some.

Shawna:
And the fun. Let's not discount the fun factor because I know some people that have trained with a trainer and it’s like they're not really enjoying themselves. BootBoot Camp Marketing_10 camp is a whole lot of fun. It's crazy how much we’re laughing at 5:30 am. We're sweating, we're laughing, we're having a great time, and so it's like… it really is a great combination of the community and the great workouts that are always changing... that's another reason why we get awesome results is because we never do the same workout twice. We're always changing the workout and that's what your body needs in order to make changes. You can't do the same things and expect different results.

Fernando:
Right. Perfect. Now last question and this is for anyone that's planning to start a boot camp business. What would you say looking back are the top 3 things that they should do in order to be successful and to be doing the right thing to go into a boot camp business?

Shawna:
You're saying anybody going into a boot camp business, what 3 things do they need to do?

Fernando:
Yes. If somebody’s thinking about that, what do you think are the 3 things they should do to prepare for it… either it be a mindset thing or what were the difficulties that you encountered and so on?

Shawna:
Well first of all you need a plan. I sound like I drank the FBBC Kool-Aid mostly because I have, but because it works. So why reinvent the wheel? Go to people that are doing the best and model them. So first of all, buy into the Fit Body Boot Camp Marketing and brand; you'll get so much support and you'll have so much done-for-you stuff. Getting into Fit Body Boot Camp is probably my top… that's really helped me a lot. I started with another boot camp name and basically the only reason it was successful was because I worked my butt off. I made it all up myself. I had a basic template but then I just made it work. But then once I got into FBBC, then it blew up. So first of all get a plan and I highly recommend Fit Body Boot Camp. Next you have to be passionate; like you can't do anything for money. I wouldn’t recommend anyone going into boot camp just saying okay well I can make good money doing this… I hate it… I'd rather be doing something totally different… then you're in the wrong business. Because you're getting up at 4:00 in the morning at first, especially until you start to outsource your training. You have to have a passion for this, for helping people and for wanting to be successful. So get a plan, be passionate, and don't be afraid to train people for free in the beginning. I could go on Fernando.

Fernando:
Those are a good starters. We're just trying to give people a taste, for them to be able to look inside what it is to be an FBBC owner and what it entails.

Shawna:
Because in the beginning you might only have a few paying clients, but get some human billboards in, get people awesome results, and don't be afraid to train people for free in the beginning so that you create a great energy and great results and then you have before and after and the credibility, and then people just start coming and people start talking.

Fernando:
Well you start to build, right? But the thing is that the ramp up process doesn't take a whole lot of time. Because like you said… in a few months… I mean you never worked in the red per say. So it’s just a very, very, short period of time for you until you get the ball rolling.

Shawna:
Fitness Boot Camp Marketing_12Exactly. I mean when we started with Krista we started with about 20 people on a 14-day Fat Furnace promotion… that was 2 weeks of practically training them for free. It was like a $77, and then we just converted them all. Because it was like wow… they just loved it. I know what we did… we gave them the rest of September for free when they bought their membership October 1. So September was a pretty mean month because everyone was on a discounted or almost free program, but then after that we were making money. And what was great is that everybody's happy. That strategy for boot camp marketing WORKS. It’s win-win because they're getting results and it's not all about making money. It's awesome to be making money but we want to be giving them awesome service and over delivering so that they always go home and tell everybody… wow what a great place this is… and then they bring their friends.

Fernando:
Awesome. Hey Shawna, thank you so much for taking the time on this call I really appreciate it.

Shawna:
My pleasure. Yeah, it's great talking to you Fernando and I'll be seeing you soon when I come down…

Fernando:
Alright. I’ll talk to you soon and have a great day.

Shawna:
Okay you bet. Bye-bye.
