Fitness Marketing Hero’s

So I'm feeling pretty fired up right now.

And instead of talking about boot camp marketing and fitness marketing to make money, I'm gonna plead with you to learn ALL the client getting secrets that you can so you can help STOP this child abuse.

Sure, the money and material things are great, but having your fitness marketing dialed in is about HELPING MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF PEOPLE!

That's why we became fitness professionals in the first place right.

Before I jump on a plan and head back to Cali from speaking at the Fitness Info Summit in Orlando Florida, I'm gonna TELL and SHOW you why I you to be a kick ass fitness marketer.

I took my family to Disney World and I saw something terrible, and it's happening all over America.

Parents are shoving the same disgusting and poisonous crap down their kids mouths that made them (the parents) OBESE!

WTF!?!!

I know they HAVE to LOVE their kids... RIGHT?

Well then seriously... W... T...F!

(I just realized I'm probably gonna break my laptop from hitting the keys so friggin hard... BUT I'M PISSED!)

I know the excuse is that maybe they just DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER.

But how can they NOT know???

If they weigh 300+ pounds, and have to waddl when they walke, or even worse, use a motorized wheel chair just to get around, then how the hell can they think that the same thing wont happen to their kids?

HOW!

It' one thing if adults want to destroy their health and cripple their body, but don't expect us to just stand here and let it happen.

I totally agree with you. As parents we need to set a good example for our kids. Kids will imitate everything that their parents do. I don't understand why parents will let themselves go like that.

What can help these kids? Adoption?

Just kidding. What we can do is more of what we are doing. Educating the public to get off their considerable asses and get moving. Eating right and moving more. It ain't rocket science. More intelligent and affordable training options can make a difference. I have to say one of the major motivational factors in clients I see is getting in shape to be a better role model for their kids. If I am being brutally honest, I think that at a certain point childhood obesity becomes child abuse. Parents need to wake up and do what is right for their kids.

You are right it is so sad! I did a story today for the local ABC channel and I had two of my clients with me and they shared with the reporter for 45 minutes (most of it in tears) how they are making a change in their lives to make sure their kids don't have to put up with the pain of obesity that they experienced.

I think the key is to educate the parents (especially the moms) about what example they are setting for themselves, but the sad thing is it won't do any good until they are ready to make that change!

Just read your email. I have to tell you something, first of all you're
an awesome marketer. I've been in this game for over 15 years and went to my first 'marketing' seminar with Jay Abraham and paid, $5,000 bucks, way back when. Well secondly, your ideas are great and right on. I've checked into some area places around here, but I'm not sure if I can do a bootcamp at the dance studios, but I'm working on it. I think if I find a spot, I'll be in your coaching program for this. I know it's probably one of the best things anyone can do and I've never met you YET...

Awesome post! It is horrible and SOO frustrating!

At the conference with us this weekend, my boyfriend and his son, along with a friend, all went to Disneyworld while I was learning some GREAT info from you and the other guys.

Anyhow, the friend we brought along is already obese at the age of 8. It was so frustrating to watch him waddle around and ask for McDonalds and other kinds of junk. Hopefully, some of the sneaky heath information I put into his head helps 🙂

Anyhow, let's go make people MORE fit and TEACH parents how to be a good role model for their kids. A great idea too is a Kids Boot Camp!!

Recently, I have started allowing the children train with mom and dad one day a week

I call it the __________ (Families Last Name)Boot Camp.

The kids love it, get to see mom and dad working towards a better life and body and best of all they get to LIVE the journey.

They love it and it is a real bonding experience for the whole family.

And I totally feel ya- this crap with these parents acting like they are not kiling their kids AND themselves really pisses me off.

One thing that has got me fired up lately is all these obese parents taking their kids to get the "swine flu shot" because they "Care about" their kids.

Well If you feed your freakin kid cookies and ice cream every damn day, they are going collect cold and flu viruses like STD's on a college campus.

Botton line- people are dumb- they need our help.

A kids success starts at home. Home life doesn't determine thier success, but it can sure help. Start by finding a way to help the parents and hope they pass it on to the kids. I train a few teachers and they have all taken what they learn from me about nutrition and pass it on to the kids they teach. Knowledge is a powerful thing as long as you use it!

This is one of the sickest thing that I've ever seen. My buddy and I used to go to Disney land and joke about it all the time, but it's time to get serious now.
We're planning on starting a couples fitness and health camp, and while the parents are working out and working on nutrition the kids will be working with trainers specializing in adolescent fitness. Double Whammy.
We're going to vastly undercharge for the camps, it's too important for us not to.

I just told a friend I'm tempted to write a book titled, "I Count Fat Kids". It has become an obsession with me. I stop total strangers who are fit and tell them, "You look fantastic, do you realize how IN THE MINORITY you are?-- keep doing what you're doing!" We went to an amusement park this summer (not Disney, but similar) I only saw THREE fit adults the entire day--- 3 out of a at least 400. I just did a moms and kids boot camp for Fall Break and my moms are begging me to do a kids camp regularly. Haven't figured it out yet, but I think it could be a HIT! Thank you for pointing out what many people aren't seeing.

Im going to volunteer my time and coach high school football, teaching them the fundamentals of exercise and lifelong habits that I learned when I was a kid, and having a helluva good time while doing it. (The kids will have fun too!)

Big idea! We can iron out the details later.

What if...
We started something like a "National Junior Health and Fitness Pro" program?

It could be a killer extra curricular program for kids in grade school to learn not just about health (in Health Class) but actually teach them to be young "Trainers!"

I could see it now... 12 year old Fit Body Junior Trainers actually teaching their overweight parents how to eat properly. Part of the course would be to put their parents or guardians through a 6 or 8 week boot camp style program...

All we have to do is follow Dale C's lead and show them why it's so important! You know... like chapter 3 (i think) about the kid who didn't want to go to kindergarten. But then was waiting to go before his parents woke up...

Obviously there's a lot to work out, but i know it can work.

Before you know it "Fit Body Jr Pros" will be teaching their parents what our parents taught us!

Pretty wacked out, huh?! But true!

We ate dinner twice in downtown Disney too and had the SAME EXACT THOUGHT! It was so sad to see kids still in high chairs munching on pizza crust and soda while their parents sat by telling their other children to "Sit Still!".

We were out on the streets today talking to people to get charter members for our boot camp, and I wish I'd read this post beforehand to remind me of why we were really out there! Thank you for posting this, it gives me a lot of motivation to push past any fears I might have about getting out there and talking to people.

FIS was awesome, thank you again for the awesome info and presentation.

Steve,
the parents should be locked up for child abuse. The kids don't earn money so the only cause of their obesity is the parents. if it's not in the fridge or cupboards then the kids can't eat it. I have a young kid (15) he's very overweight and his mum is quite skinny, she gives him hell for being overweight and i actually gave her a piece of my mind 2 weeks ago and said that it was her fault he was fat. she should have looked after him more and been more responsible by getting him to eat healthier and exercise more.
instead of waiting so long and then making him feel bad cause he can't do as much as the other kids. She wasn't real happy about what i said to her, then i told her, her son wasn't real happy for what SHE had done to him.
She shut up real quick and apologized to me and her son. Now he has lost 11kg (25lbs) in 3 weeks and the mum is exercising with my sessions and with her son.

Let me tell you Steve. I am so glad you made a post about this. I see this all the time and it bothers the shyt out of me.

I am glad I am not the only one. I see this kind of stuff and it literally breaks my heart and gets me furious. How can any body be happy living that kind of lifestyle?

I know they hate it and would lose all the weight if they could so why put your kids through it? you just inspired me in a whole new way Steve and I thank you very much for it.

Oh and I dont know if you remember or not but on the second day of the info summit, my girlfriend came up to you and asked if it was ok if she entered the ballroom to sit with me and you walked her in. She said that you asked if she was ok, And between you and me, she was a little tipsy lol

Spot on the money Steve. The best thing I can do is help those people that feed their kids that crap - ie the parents. If we can get them in shape and make them think about their food choices then their kids - or future kids - will benefit from smarter choices.

I have thought about this problem a lot especially when my son started school and I found out that the PTA kept the school alive by selling junk food after school. I also found out that whenever a child has a birthday, parents bring in cupcakes and junk food and feed it to all of the children in the class. Whenever there is a holiday, parents volunteer to make goodies and throw parties. My son, who suffers from food allergies, had a very healthy diet but succumbed to sugar addiction after starting school. So the problem is not just parents feeding their children junk food, it is parents feeding junk food to other parent's children.

This year, my son's teacher decided to tell parents who want to throw cupcake parties to bring in non-food treats for the five children with allergies or sensitivities. This is great news for my son but, unfortunately, the other children will be spoiled with candy. Candy is cheap and parents and teachers prefer to use it. Of course, we learned that rewarding children with food leads to eating disorders. Looks like the elementary school teachers never got that memo from the fitness community. I've put my two cents in to the school. My son is in a new magnet school but the rules don't seem to have changed.

I try to plant seeds here and there. I am very upfront with my clients about what they should and shouldn't be eating. I reach a few hundreds of people a week in my fitness classes and put in my subliminal messages about nutrition. I've also worked at they YMCAs and have put my two cents in with the children there. I agree that what we do is about saving lives. A person is nothing without his health and we teach people to be responsible for themselves. We are healers and role models. I have seen fitness professionals work miracles.

How can you help? I guess you could start a campaign to stop the cupcake parties or to ban junk food at schools, not just from the cafeteria but from the PTA as well.

As hard as it might seem trying to understand those parents is my first step. I know by a fact that some do know they are making bad decisions and their kids will suffer from horrible habits.
The question is WHY they keep on doing it. We can't do anything to those parents that don't see the problem but those that do, we are already helping.
With all the stuff you are teaching us we are making them impossible not to exercise. We go to their jobs, stylist, restaurants, schools.
Steve you are showing us how to reach more parents and charge their lives!

Hey Steve - thanks for the awesome post - absolutely 10000% true. I get so angry, as I witness this EXACT bullsh*t going on everyday. What part of this isn't actual CHILD ABUSE? Seriously...I am not kidding - you are abusing their bodies in almost unimaginable ways, so how is this different than what is commonly known as 'child abuse'?

If someone has that answer, please let me know - enlighten me!

great post! i think for some fit pro's (if you can call them that) they need to be reminded why they are in this business in the 1st place! To change people's lives!

Something that really ticked me off just yesterday was some dude called me asking about my boot camp - he wanted to start his own in his town b/c he noticed "the craze" and figured he could just make some quick money. I asked him why he wanted to do it. He has NO past experience training, no desire to train other people but him self, and on top of that no real CARE for the people that will be in his boot camps. He's just trying to make $.

He could sense I didn't like his answers so he quickly ended the call.

Please, if your a fit pro - the money will come - as long as you CARE for your clients. Spread your passion for changing people's lives!

I am fron the deep south too. I knew you were going to write something like this. In the state of AL- we are the
fattest state in the U.S. Yes, we need to do something like this.... why not develop a KIDS camp and get their body
to kick in and help them to love the exercises and improve their health too. Yes, most parents I see are
obese and/or morbidly obese. I konw from a child's heart- they are embarrassed to have a fat parents or single parent.
It is VERY SAD to see this. There is way to reach out. Thanks for the post Steve.

Wow! Very Profound and unfortunately...TRUE!

I have been wondering how to help leave a legacy for our children...help to shape the next generation for the better... I thought about going back into children's ministry...so why not help children to stay fit and healthy? That helps them spiritually, emotionally, physically and financially. WOW When you mentioned CHILD ABUSE!! That really rang a bell. Frustratingly TRUE, when we do not teach the children...train them in the way that they should go...the way that is healthiest to live...that is in fact Child Abuse. I am sorry to say that photos say a thousand words. I didn't like what the photos showed, but it is a hard reality.

Gotta re-teach the American's how to live~

Steve!! Whats good, its was good meeting u and hanging out at the Summit! But u are right this is some sad shit to look at. It makes no sense. Its not fair to the kid(s).

The sad part is growing up the kid is only gonna know fast food, donuts, pizza, no activity to name a few.

I mean sometimes I look up and I just shake my heads and say that person wont change until its too late. Until they get a true wake up call.

I mean hell, everytime u try to address to people to get in shape, get healthy stay active they get a f'ing attitude like u telling them something thats bad! That shit is funny! So really at the end of the day all we can do its take care of home cause some folks WILL NEVER learn. [And that's just the truth]

Great post mate. I actually can't believe you were that nice with the photos, after spending the day a Magic Kingdom with the McCombs faamily, you have been real polite with the photos cause I saw some families much bigger than those shown...

Now I have to say I live in Australia and we have just taken over the world as the fattest country in the WORLD.... ( gotta be happy with that).

We really have to spread the word and get to work on the parents to change our cultures that we are creating.

Now after spending the last few days with you & the other great marketers, you said to find a niche market and focus on it...

Mine is going to be kids ( and their parents).

I have a program that I use very successfully at around 15 schools each week here in Canberra ( never thought I could do much else with it), and I am going to put it out there to everyone so that I become accountable for this ( learnt that at the Fitness Summit), and I am going to lauch my Mini Commandoes Program that will be available to all Personal Trainers around the world.

With this will also be an E- Book the parents can download that is for them to read and learn. I anticiapte to have this ready to launch by Feb 2010...

So keep me accountable everybody and start chasing me up in January to see that I am on track.
