starting a fitness boot camp

Fernando:
Hi all! This is Fernando Bonato, head coach here at the FBBC and today I have Scott Wyatt on the phone with me. Scott owns Fit Body Boot camp, West Covina, CA. I decided to ask him to share a few of the methods he uses to achieve the great things he's been able to accomplish since joining FBBC. Hi Scott, thanks for taking the call.

Scott:
Hi, how are you doing?

Fernando:
Good. Okay so here's the first question… just so people can have a feel for your background how long have you been with FBBC as facility owner?

Scott:

About six months now.

Fernando:
Six months now, so relatively new to the family.

Scott:
Yes, yes… very new.

Fernando:
What attracted you to Fit Body Boot Camp?

Scott:
Well, my whole career has been in the construction field and the chemical end of the construction field, and I first started to get introduced to boot camp by actually being a boot camper, going to boot camp and being a participant, and just one of the things we noticed about that, the change in people’s lives and the effect that you have on everybody. We were wanting to start a fitness boot camp business and then we found out about Fit Body and it just kind of seemed like the perfect thing to do.

Fernando:
So you came from obviously nowhere near the fitness industry but you saw that it was a good business model, right?

Scott:
Yes, yes… when we first started it, it was strictly by the numbers as a business to make money and then as we opened up our doors and got to know everybody and our family of boot campers and everything, it’s obviously become a lot more than that with all the relationships and stuff that we build with our boot campers.

Fernando:
Excellent, and can you tell us how your FBBC location is doing for you as of today and a little bit about how you got to this point.

Scott:
Right now we are running 11 classes a day and all but 2 of the classes we run anywhere from 20 to 30 people per class. So it’s going quite well right now, and one of the ways that we got there… the majority of it is the Groupon thing that we did through FBBC. That helped us out a lot, we’ve done Living Socials, we’ve done the Amazon.com. That’s kind of our forte. We have a pretty good closing rate on those.

Fernando:
So is it safe to say that by now you’re a six figure business.

Scott:
Oh yes, definitely.

Fernando:
How long did it take you to achieve the six figure mark from the moment you opened the doors?

Scott:
From the time we opened the doors, probably about 3 ½ months, maybe 4.

Fernando:
Excellent. Out of all the areas of the business right now, what would you say are the areas that you’re excelling the most at? From income generation, closing, retention, what do you think your best asset is?

Scott:
I would have to say the closing.

Fernando:
The closing?

Scott:
Yeah.

Fernando:
And obviously you do all that following the systems that FBBC gives you right.

Scott:
Yes, absolutely. Because we didn’t know anything about this industry. We were highly dependent on all the videos and the text and literature and everything from FBBC.

Fernando:
That’s great. As far as your session times on a daily basis, how did you decide what hours of the day are your session times?

Scott:
Well we started out because we are in a shopping center, kind of a strip mall, so I am in a conditional use permit. I don’t know if everybody else has to deal with that but here in California we have to deal with that. So, one of my conditions of my building is from 10:00 to 5:00pm I can’t operate. I can’t have the big classes. So that kind of just set us up to where we’re doing classes from early in the morning, we do classes from 5-10:00am and we start back up at 5:00pm we go until 9:00pm, our last class is at 8:00pm.

Fernando:
Do you feel like you’re missing out by not being able to operate your fitness boot camp business between 10-5pm or it’s pretty much the time that people are not willing to work out anyway?

Scott:
No those were kind of… when we went in front of the city board we had kind of setup our times anyway that we had wanted, and they just approved us of that because where we’re at there are a lot of working class people so we wouldn’t really get any business during the day anyway. Not enough to warrant sales.

Fernando:
Right everybody is at work.

Scott:
Exactly, everybody is working.
